Time Management for the IELTS Exam

IELTS (International English Language Testing System) is a proficient English test that evaluates a person’s English language proficiency. It has four sections: listening, reading, writing, and speaking. The total time provided is 2 hours 45 minutes. 40 minutes for listening, 60 minutes for reading, 60 minutes for writing, and 11-14 minutes for speaking. Time management for the IELTS exam is the process of allocating conscious time to complete specific activities. Management of time in the IELTS exams is one of the top strategies for avoiding stress and solving it calmly. Here are tips for time management for every section:

Listening: This is the foremost section of the test; the time allocated for this section is 40 minutes, and it contains 40 questions. You will have 30 minutes to listen to recordings and 10 minutes to transfer your answers to the paper. There are four recordings of native English speakers and a set of mixed questions for every recording. The recording is played only once; read the questions thoroughly before the recording is played. So, listening to the audio carefully helps you to handle time when writing answers. Write short answers to save time; use the remaining time to review the following questions.

Reading: This is the second section; one hour is allocated to this part. There are three parts in this section and it contains 40 questions with a maximum of twenty minutes for each section. The difficulty level ascends with each part; ensure to manage your time well. Try to finish the easy part quickly and use the extra time to answer further sections. You can review your answers again if sufficient time is remaining. Browse the questions beforehand as it can help trace answers using keywords.

Writing:  60 minutes is allocated for this section; this test has two writing tasks. You write the first task in about 150 words and within 20 minutes on a given visual topic; it could be a chart, table, graph, or diagram. The second task is to write a 250-word essay on the general topic within 40 minutes. Grab the objective of the topic and frame an essay on that. Tasks ascend from easy to difficult levels.  Ensure that you spend only 20 minutes or less on formal tasks. Manage your time and have last-minute to check grammar, verbs, or the formation of an essay.

Speaking: This is the last section; it may be conducted immediately after the test or within 7 days of the test.11–14 min is the duration allotted to this section. The examiner interviews you to assess your communication skills. You will be given a topic card and have one minute to prepare. Make notes of keywords you want to convey and don’t fumble.

Setting a particular time for your IELTS exam including every section can help you complete the exam without hassles. Along with these, you must practice using IELTS mock tests regularly to assess your time management skills for every section of IELTS.
